Your solar panels generate energy. A home battery makes sure you actually use it.
Most Australian homes with solar send excess power back to the grid for a few cents per kilowatt-hour — then buy it back at peak rates come evening. A home battery changes that equation entirely. It stores the energy you generate during the day and puts it to work when you need it most.
A home battery (also called a Battery Energy Storage System, or BESS) is a rechargeable unit installed at your home that stores electricity generated by your solar panels. Instead of exporting unused solar energy to the grid for minimal return, you keep it — and use it on your own terms.
Think of it as a fuel tank for your solar system.
You fill it during the day. You draw from it at night.

Revcharge’s free assessment analyses your actual solar output, energy bills, and state rebate eligibility — and gives you a real quote, not a generic estimate.
Without storage, most solar households self-consume only 30–40% of what they generate. A battery can push that figure above 80%, dramatically reducing reliance on the grid.
Avoid expensive peak tariffs by drawing from stored solar instead of buying power at evening rates. Many Revcharge customers see significant reductions in their quarterly bills.
Electricity prices continue to rise. A battery insulates your household from price spikes by maximising the solar energy you produce and store yourself.
Some battery systems offer blackout protection — keeping essential appliances running during a grid outage. Not all batteries include this feature by default, so it’s worth discussing with your Revcharge installer.
If you own an electric vehicle, a home battery unlocks the ability to charge your car from stored solar — effectively fuelling your EV for free on the energy you’ve already generated.
Batteries are the foundation of tomorrow’s grid. With Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) emerging across Australia, your battery could earn you additional income by supporting the grid at peak times.
Book a free Revcharge assessment. We’ll tell you exactly what a battery will cost, what you’ll save, and what rebates apply to your home — with no obligation to proceed.
A home battery makes the most sense when you already have solar panels installed. Without solar generation to charge from, the economics rarely stack up. If you’re an existing solar owner looking to get more value from your system — a battery is the natural next step.
Not sure if your home is the right fit? Revcharge offers free, obligation-free assessments to help you understand your options.
Do I need solar panels to get a home battery?
Yes — a home battery on its own is rarely a sound investment without solar. A battery’s core job is to store the surplus energy your solar panels generate during the day so you can use it at night, instead of exporting it to the grid for a minimal feed-in rate and buying it back at peak prices.
Most residential home battery systems in Australia cost between $8,000 and $15,000 fully installed — before any applicable government rebates or incentives. The final price depends on the battery brand and capacity, the complexity of your existing solar setup, your state, and any additional hardware required for backup power.
Will a home battery keep my power on during a blackout?
Not automatically — and this is one of the most common misconceptions about home batteries.
Standard battery installations are connected to the grid and are designed to shut down during a grid outage. This is a safety requirement to protect electricity workers. Without additional hardware, your battery will not power your home during a blackout — even if it’s fully charged.
Most residential home battery installations are completed in a single day — typically between four and eight hours, depending on the complexity of your system and your existing solar setup.
What government rebates are available for home batteries in Australia?
Several federal and state-based incentive programs are available to reduce the upfront cost of a home battery system. Availability and amounts change as funding rounds open and close — Revcharge confirms your current eligibility as part of every free assessment.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?
In most cases, yes. Adding a battery to an existing solar system — known as a retrofit — is one of the most common installations Revcharge completes. Modern battery systems are compatible with a wide range of inverter brands and solar configurations, including many systems installed five or more years ago.
